We just wrapped up being interviewed by Dateline NBC in regards to Freemasonry and Dan Browns book "The Lost Symbol". They are doing and exclusive feature interview with Dan Brown and we were selected to interview with them as part of supplemental or backup information on such topics as the Chamber of Reflection that we use in Enlightenment Lodge 198, and the parallels of Alchemy, Hermetic philosophy, and our own personal beliefs on the real "secrets" in masonry...photos to follow, we have some on our facebook pages now but are working on some more...The Dateline NBC episode will air Friday October 16th.

We have a pretty good feeling that this will be shown as a really positive piece about Freemasonry since they are doing a very positive piece on Dan Brown...Jerry Springer didn't jump out and attack us, and the interviewer didn't ask really any prying questions really at all and asked very open questions so that we were not giving defensive answers at all but were able to just tell our story...in a very positive, educational and energetic way.

Just to have a little fun with the editors....who I am sure are some guys in NY....when I found out Tim was mic'd up awaiting some shooting of his alchemy presentation...I walked up to another Brother nearby and whisper...."Man I am glad they didn't find out about the Grail....we really dodged a bullet...and the whole Mary Magdalena thing...if the truth ever came out."

Then we both couldn't help it and started laughing...but for just a second someone will get a bit of a shock.

I can not think of a better group of Brothers to do that interview. For once there will be an honest frank presentation of Freemasonry. Of course however, there may be some young ambitious editor that hears Bro. Cliff's grail/magdaline comments and runs with it.:rolf:Sadie bar the door we are found out!!

It was definitely an interesting experience, and I hope we were able to provide some different perspective to what Freemasonry has to offer and why it is relevant for our times. I can absolutely state that everyone spoke from the heart and tried to emphasize the mystery that makes us unique from regular social clubs. I'm certain we were able to provide some great visual imagery that will peak interest. We also tried to make it clear that Freemasonry has many different things to offer many different people, and some Masons are drawn to it more for the education and the personal transmutation that comes from growth within the system. We also tried to have a little fun with them. The father and the uncle of the interviewer are brother Masons, so I'm sure that will help contribute to a fair reporting. Anyhow, thanks for the support brothers! It will be a two hour special on Friday, October 16th, 2009.

I don't blame you; the media has a habit of editing for the story they're going to tell, as we've discussed here before. Top that off with the fact that it's YOUR name attached to part of it, which you rightfully value. I guess it comes down to trust . . .

I am sure that all those who presented information for this show did so with honest, true, and noble intentions. We all know that regardless of the content, those who support us will continue to do so, those who condemn us will continue to do so, which leaves those who are undecided. If the show does not present us in a fair light, perhaps rebuttals could be authored and placed on the Lodge website and in various sites on the web which would be subject to Google-ing, etc. In this way, any viewers who are interested would be able to search the web for specific response. Given the manner in which we are treated in Mr. Brown's book, it would seem odd for them to take a contrary view, versus presenting information which is in keeping with the theme of the novel (regardless of the copious errors).

I hope Brother Cliff, Rob, Tim, and Shawn - as well as the Craft as a whole - are rewarded with a fair, thoughtful, and clear presentation. I also think that it may serve as a wake up call to the "apologists."

Well done Brothers - I can't wait to see it. :D

OKAY,

Has anyone else attached themselves to the show so when it airs you can sit next to your buddies or wife and nonchalantly say "yeah me and brother Herd were talking about this last week." I have. Oh yeah, confession time baby, I've got my family thinking I'm mysterious and connected because I know those guys and we talk every week. ;)

Oh don't act like you haven't played it up. . . . . anyone else got an ego issue and used this situation to there personal advantage? :byebye: LOL. I'm the poor guy that has never actually sat in lodge with you guys but will be referring to you by first name, as if we eat dinner together every Tuesday to discuss top secret business. . . D**m I'm pathetic. Oh well, it still gonna be fun.

I'm trying to stay grounded on this 'cause you know what guys, like they told us, they might use all, some or NONE of our interviews... but hey, ya I have my fingers crossed that we get a bit of our message out....

I'd also like to say how wonderful it is to actually have support too Bro James...there are a LOT of Brothers out there who immediately put us on their $hit list because of doing this....There will be a wonderful amount of hand shakes/pats on the back...and unfortunately also a lot of negative responses to our conducting this filming/interview as I have already been seeing...

I've been saying it since I joined here . . . if we as regular Masons don't define Masonry in the public eye, then it will be defined for us by the public and the media. And they'll start asking why we're racists because of the Prince Hall situation, and why we're sexists because Co-Masons are clandestine when they're such nice people, etc. etc. etc.

We need to stand up and give an account of who we are and what we believe. You guys had the balls to go on national TV for the Craft, and trust that the editors would give you a fair shake. Anyone who puts you on their you-know-what list for that is auditioning for a spot on mine.

I am hoping this will open many fruitful discussions. I would be interested to know why some Brothers have condemned what Bro. Cliff, Tim, Rob, and Shawn have done - with the Grand Master present - which I as a massive boon to the Craft. It would be interesting to see if these same nay-sayers are of the "we aren't secret, no mysteries here" crowd...seems inconsistent behavior if they are.

Douglas Lodge had a Grand Master's visit last evening. The GM was kind enough to have an "open" session (versus a tyled one) where Brothers, spouses, and prospective members could attend, so I don't see a problem with posting some of the MW Brother's comments here.

He talked about the show, gave kudos to Bros. Tim, Cliff, Rob, and Shawn as being Brothers well versed in the history of the Craft (no names mentioned though). He also said he was concerned about how the work could be edited, even though the producers have since spoken with him and said it will be a very positive show.

He also charged the Brothers present with getting up to speed on Freemasonry, saying that things are changing (he used the word "changing") and we may well expect a wave of interest and candidates - and they may well be better informed about Freemasonry than many current Brothers were when they petitioned. He said the reason the producers called him in the first place was, every time they approached a body to ask questions related to Brown's book, they got referred to Colorado. While not specifying any one path with regard to Masonic Education, the GM did leave the door open for further efforts along this line.

I think the GM's speech shows both support for the efforts taken by our Brothers and is a sound endorsement of their goals. :D

Brothers that was amazing! Thanks for standing up for what you believe in. I will back up what all the brothers from TSS said 100%. I like the bit on mind effecting matter. The picture of the water crystals was from Dr Masaru Emoto. Very powerful stuff! I think I mentioned that on here somewhere in TSS. There is only one thing I am greatly dissapointed with. That is the opposition to what we believe and practicly know to be true regarding the secrets of freemasonry. I was hit with negative comments from brothers here in TX immediatly regarding those who were in the film from Colorado. First response, "Their not recognized by the GL of TX." Second response, "their not high up enough they dont know." I don't know what do about the opposition here in Texas. Its quite frustrating. One thing that is interesting is that Arturo is a member of the YR bodies here in C.C. as well as the valley I belong to and is a friend of a friend of mine. I was supprised to hear his take on it as well.

Trust me brother im very upset right now. I apologize for the behavior and closed mindedness of some here. It hurts me more than I can even explain. I think Brother Cliff gets the gold for his line re. the fact that the Craft has no secrets, and everything can be found out on Google:

"...nothing [pause] could be further from the truth..." :D :D

Good to see Bro. Cliff, Bro. Tim and Bro. Rob on the TV. This is the second time I've seen Brother Cliff on the tube, btw. I caught him on some show called... The Interrogators... before.

Good stuff. Dan Brown was in good company. :)

You guys did great. I can hear others saying already though, "They don't do THAT in our lodge". Keep up the great work.

Overall the interview with Dan Brown was stellar. I'll be happy if we get just one true well meaning petition from someone watching the show... Just one... And I mean true as in of the same spirit that those here carry for the craft.

I was shocked to see Bro. Shawn Beyer, no one (at least what I have read, said he was going to be interviewed) It was a big suprise for me and he gets my gold star. He could not have described the experiance better, without giving away anything. Bro. Shawn I must say is one of the best men I have ever met.

What a great sigh of relief. You guys did a great job. I wish you all could have picked the topics and had your hand at determining the overall content, but even still it was favorable and positive. I hope good men are influenced to seek us out, and I hope that they and we recognize the value of our secrets and mysteries. May those good men find no bake sales.

I looked for the DATELINE episode, but couldn't find it, even on Hulu. Saw some of the web-only articles on the NBC site, but not the full episode. Guess I'll go back to watching the OUTER LIMITS collection until it surfaces.

Fellas...I heard thru a source yesterday that it will NOT be shown on the net....part of a predetermined agreement. All that will ever be available will be the transcript unless someone puts it out there from a personal copy... and which would result in NBC coming quickly after you for copyright infringement.

Boourns! I really want to see this! I only overheard part of this interview from another room because i had just started working on a website for our lodge & was really anxious to produce an initial draft to show the Brothers. But from what i heard & read in the transcript, it was all about Dan Brown & there wasn't nearly enough discussion with our learned Brothers.

Sorry - but i have never read a Dan Brown novel & probably never will - just beacause i am not a fiction fan. I spent 5 years before becoming a Freemason reading every book i could get my hands on that gave historical accounts of the fraternity.

Since this book came out & since the interview aired - i have had co-workers & friends who know I am a Mason approach me for info on the fraternity. I am sure we'll see a spike in petitions as a direct result of this book - but my fear is these new members will be seeking the sensationalized version of Freemasonry they have read about in fiction novels & result in great dissappointment.

Alright....I finally got an evening out of the duck blind to watch this show, which I TIVO'd...

First off...Tim, Bob, and Cliff ROCK!@ :D.... You guys were the coolest cats there..

Brown, was pretty evasive and, while flattering, still full of s*&^...

And can somebody tell me what was up with that weird piece of mock ritual? A JD with a top hat? The SD dressed as the reaper? WTH???

All in all, I liked it....;)

Frater Cliff Porter

Well it might seem strange, but Enlightenment lodges expert wears the robe as he attends to the chamber of reflection, so that once he interacts with the candidate after the hoodwinked is removed, he doesn't see us dressed for lodge.

The tux is our lodge uniform. A brother in a tux receives the candidate at his home, brings him to lodge and hands him off to the Expert.

The robe is a concealing of the uniform and a proper dress from someone attending a chamber in which the man will suffer his profane self to die.

Bro. Nate Fall

Been to lodge in 6 states and 5 countries and have never seen that practiced... But...it was kinda cool to see...Does anybody have any literature on old chamber of reflection traditions? I would love to read up on that and propose the practice for my lodge...

The Brother with the hat was WB Rob Herd, and the "reaper" was Brother Terrible, I think.

Bro. Nate, I'll PM you the paper I gave as education to our AASR body.

Frater Cliff Porter
10-21-2009, 09:49 AM
Brother Terrible is a person, much like a Deacon in a way that you see in Red Lodge degrees and I will admit that the study of such traditions entered into considerations for the practice.

There is also a history of such practices within other orders closely associated to Masonry such as those who know the mantle.

The idea, again, is that the neophyte is not able to see the lodge brothers "dressed as Masons" until such a time as he receives light. So the man he is first confronted with after answering questions in the chamber is the Expert, more importantly if he leaves the chamber and decides not to progress he never sees the men of the lodge, who they are, what they are dressed like, etc....
