Here's my own way of selecting lodges: consider ones that have their own web-sites. How else can you really tell anything about the lodge without actually going over there before a meeting?
This "web-site" method may pass up a lot of otherwise good lodges, of course. But so many new brothers tell me the same thing - 'I picked my lodege becasue of what I saw on their web site..." This should say to any lodge, "what is "your lodge's face to the world (if any) and what kind of men do you expect to knock?"
When looking at a lodges site I search a couple of things, the calender, to see what kinds of activity's the lodge likes to do, and photos of lodge activity - what can you tell about the diversity of the lodge?
Last month, I was looking to visit a lodge in another state. I picked the one that had a good web-site, and on their events page I saw a monthly D&D game night! I don't play D&D, but guessed something about a lodge that would sponsor a game night. It worked, they were a vibrant lodge and diverse bunch of brothers.

Sir, most lodges have a dinner where before they go up to lodge you can come sit down and talk with many of them to see if you'd be a good fit for them and vis a verse.... I'd honestly "try before you buy" this way... because yes, cultures/ages/traditions will vary from lodge to lodge even within the same town/city.

Like brother Herd said. I would contact the Grand Lodge of BC and Yukon and get a list of names and numbers in your area. Also express your concern and ask for some recommendations of a Progressive, active lodge. There will be half dozen at least in your area. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Thank you all for the recommendations. I've contacted the grand lodge for contact information, and I will avail myself of opportunities to go to dinners and meet the people in the lodge beforehand. I've also been looking at lodge web-sites, though the ones near me seem either to have most information closed to non-members, or else they are out of date, with out of date contact info. We will see what the Grand Lodge says.
